Orecchiette means "little ears" - and they really do sort of look like tiny ears don't they? And, as for the Puttanesca sauce,well, it's salty, delicious, and it's got a little bite to it. It was supposedly invented by the Neapolitan "ladies of the evening" - quick, easy, (the sauce, not the ladies) and would entice "customers" to come to the bordello, according to one version of the story.
Those little ears are perfect for cradling a chunky sauce like we're making here. No pasta machine you say? No problem - you don't need one to make orecchiette!
